about

Musically the track starts out with a very shoe-gazy atmospheric guitar line that progresses into more and more sound until the lyrics kick in. From there, it takes on a doom metal sound with a slow marching beat that builds up into a 6/8 swung rhythm. It then goes back to a 4/4 rhythm followed by an odd timing rhythm pattern with the drums and rhythm guitar while the lead guitar plays a similar themed riff to the previous sections. Then a chorus-like chord progression takes place that turns into a slower swung breakdown. That's followed by more spacey guitar atmosphere that progresses into a lo-fi sounding black metal section. As the song nears end each part previously heard rhythmically is played and ends with the opening guitar line.

The lyrics are a combination of ideas from Guy Ritchie's film "Revolver" as well as Don Miguel Ruiz's book "The Four Agreements." They connect the theme of overcoming one's ego as a way to personal freedom and use ideas of the model of the psyche from Sigmund Freud which are the Id, the ego, and the super ego. The Id is the part of the brain that deals with instinctual needs such as eating, sleeping, or breathing. The super ego is made up of cultural beliefs handed down from those who have influenced you in your life and upbringing. The ego differentiates between the two. When speaking of the personal demon inside every human, the lyrics refer to that as the ego to make things simple which comes from Ritchie while Ruiz refers to it as the "judge."

Certain lines are taken from both Ritchie and Ruiz.

Ritchie lines:
You dare not break the investment,
You've been owned by the greatest enemy
You'd never find his hiding place.
Give each external what they want,
they are not your enemies.
Use your perceived enemy to destroy your real enemy.

Ruiz lines:
The judge, the victim
Your false self shows your true self's flaws.
